Christmas Letter 2007

Dear friends and family,

As I sit atop my throne at Plante Manor, baby-belly bulging under my purple velour mantle, I’ve had an epiphany. No, not that the royal heir needs a diaper change, but that it’s December and time for us all to collectively reflect on another year gone by and celebrate the festiveness of the season with love and holiday cheer.

The kingdom of Plante-ville has thrived once again, experiencing a most unexpectedly amazing year filled with familial, environmental and culinary marvels. We joined an organic CSA and were able to explore a whole new aspect of planting, growing, cooking and eating that shocked my conscience so that I’m forever changed. Eating food straight from its harvest provides a link to the land so innately civilized yet intoxicatingly feral that I truly never want to go back. For the spring summer and fall, we ate only organic foods, including milks, cheeses and meats, and I’ve never felt healthier.

When the cold blast of winter faded begrudgingly into a wet New England spring, the curtain lifted on my new job – collecting and editing the news for screens in high-rise metropolitan elevators. Sounds glamorous for a queen like me, but it’s mostly just good fun to patrol the Internet looking for the quirky tales, new studies and strange facts hidden underneath the day’s top stories. It can be jading work, but it makes me appreciate my calm and quiet life even more, and when I am home, the news goes off.

Jason continues to impress royal subjects near and far with his trove of knowledge and

impeccable comic timing. His work hasn’t taken him far from home, and in his little cube of coding, surrounded by his knightly action figures, he is both a wizard and a master at his trade.

His productions from last year won top honors at the N.H. Theatre Awards, and after a much deserved and well-earned video-game break, with no hint of his thespian dispositions save for the award displayed above our TV, he is back on his director’s chair for a dark murder-comedy due to open in March. Which means that I am once again queen of the Manor, during rehearsals at least, free to rule over my humble kingdom as I choose.

Queen of the Manor, indeed. More like servant to the heir, a little bundle of belly giggles

and perpetual zoom who makes each day a fascinating mix of absolute exhaustion and sheer amusement. As he runs top speed on his tip-toes and demands electronic devices such as remote controls and cell phones with a pointed finger and an impish “Dis?” he gets his delights from the simple things, like watching a kitty bat playfully at a toy or wearing his sunglasses in the bathtub. He impressed our favorite farmer with his palate for tomatoes, eaten like apples straight off the vine, and delighted the kingdom in full tiger regalia with his Halloween rendition of both Calvin and Hobbes. He makes me smile even when I don’t want to, and if I could just tickle him and hear that throaty little laugh forever, I’d be eternally content.

Yet even as my queenly vocabulary shrinks to a bite-sized toddler “No!” my lone solace and sanity come from quiet after-bedtime nights spent laughing on the royal couch with Jason. It never matters what we’re watching or snacking on, the companionship and warmth between us can instantly lift my mood and revive my senses. Always-fashionable king to my well-coifed queen, he rules over the land – and my heart – with his iron voice and sharp wit, diaper in one hand and Xbox Live headset perched on his brow like a crown.

As the bell chimes notifying me that it is time once again raise the drawbridge in preparation for the dinner, bath and bed routine, I’d like to wish you all, from my kingdom to yours, another year of bountiful harvests, festive celebrations, royal welcomes and delicious discoveries.

Happy Christmas,

Amber

Second Entry

Ahh, given more time, my titles will get more interesting.

Just a quick note to say that on July 6--two and a helf weeks early--I delivered Calvin Harrison into this world, and the little guy is quite a toughie :) He is a very strong baby with brown hair and eyes that are dark blue but turning brown. He has my lips and my husband's eyes, and he is just gorgeous.

I'm back at work, back at knitting and back to the status quo.

Jason, my darling husband, is currently (begrudgingly) back at work in the theatre community and directing the Pirate Stage Company's Rocky Horror Show. Anyone looking for a sexy night of laughing, skimpy outfits and the very best talent in the area, the show goes up the weekend after Halloween at the Court Street Theater in Nashua. Come in costume -- a special treat for "virgins." :)

Until next time.

first entry

[blank stare]... i don't know who to address this to... cyberland? curious passersby? strangers? who ever you are, i don't mind you reading my thoughts, so i guess that covers all my bases.

i'm amber, i'll be turning 26 in a few weeks, and i work as a successful editor at a magazine in new england. i have brown hair (which i like to dye -- ask me about the green anime incident...) and big green eyes. i'll be happily married for four years in june, and overall, i'm quite content.

i'm pregnant, too, by the way :) 25 weeks this morning, and the baby is a little boy who likes to kick during my work meetings and generally takes the weekends off. he's apparently going to be born with a head full of black hair (not simply because my husband and I are both dark-haired) because, according to folk wisdom, when you have heartburn and your pregnant, the baby has a lot of hair. and trust me, i have heartburn so terrible it's hard to sleep at night.

but, alas, i digress. i've recently taken a veer off my my normal path with a side life in the theatre. my husband is an actor and director in his spare time, so i figured that, while i'm not-so-patiently waiting for this baby to be born, i might as well join in, too. we're putting up a show on memorial day weekend called "run for your wife" -- he's directing, and i'm stage managing. so far, it's been a lot of fun, and a lot of work taking blocking notes. the actors are talented, and i'm enjoying the experience.

hmm.. some of my interests... i am a huge harry potter fan -- i love anything to do with the books (not the movies). check out www.mugglenet.com if you are also interested. there are also some really talented writers on www.checkmated.com who take the characters created by JKRowling and continue her stories. it's called fanfic, and it's a great way to indulge yourself while waiting patiently for book 7 or the "do not disturb" sign to be removed from the mysterious door (www.jkrowling.com). i go by the handle 'amber' on checkmated -- i'm a beta reader (or, as i treat my writers, an editor) for the authors. the stories are great fun to read, and it helps me keep up and hone my editing skills for work.

as i sit here and type this, i'm eating a carton of raspberries for breakfast. the baby craves fruit, by the way, so it's a mainstay in my diet. but, i'm being a little strange -- i always check the insides compartments of the raspberries to make sure there isn't a bug in there. i swear i can't be the only person who does this...

also, i'm a knitter. yes, like grandma in her rocking chair on the porch. but, knitting has had a big revival over the last five years or so, and i'm proud to be able to do it -- though i've barely ever finished a project bigger than a scarf. it's a great time filler, and the sense of accomplishment is pretty fantastic. pick up 'stich n' bitch' if you at all interested -- it's a great book with some funky designs that i'm sure will spark your interest. i'm looking for interesting thinsg to knit for a baby right now, so if you have any ideas or patterns, please send them my way.

well, i suppose that's a good place to stop this first entry. if there really are any readers out there, i'll explain my intentions quickly -- i can't promise to update this regularly; nor will i promise to be on topic of anything. i'm a good writer, so you will at least be getting interesting commentary, reviews and updates on my 'condition' (hehe) when the mood so strikes me. :)

until next time.
